Designing the Designer

TABLE 2

ICSI Round One
ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is an assisted reproduction technique used alongside in vitro fertilization (IVF) where a single sperm cell is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg in a laboratory.

The ‘ICSI Round One’ ring zooms in on the first round of my parents fertility treatments and embryo transfers.

I imaged what the ring size of my embryo siblings would be, some just cell divisions and one who almost made it.

Pregnancy number one would have been born in July 2000.

A lab grown Ruby birthstone is set to commemorate them.

ICSI Round Two
The ‘ICSI Round Two’ ring depicts the second round of fertility treatments and embryo transfers.

This time ten embryos were succesfully incubated. It was a survival of the fittest battle for who of us would survive and somehow I won?

9 siblings concieved on the same day as I was. I wonder what they would have been like.

A lab grown garnet birthstone is set onto the ring to respresent my January 2001 birthday.

ICSI Round Three
The ‘ICSI Round Three’ ring focuses on the last round of fertility treatments my family underwent.

This time featuring two beautiful babies. My little brother Archie and my little sister Jessica who were born in April 2003.

Twins are a more likely occurrence in IVF as multiple embryos are being implanted into the uterus at one time.

Two Lab grown diamond birthstones are set into the baby rings which correspond to Archie and Jessies ring sizes.

Jessie was sitting on Archies head throughout the pregancy which inspired the pose.

My Biological Clock
My Biological Clock speaks to the questions this project brought up concering my own fertility.

The watch is counting down the days until I medically become a geriatric pregnancy. 10 years, 120 months, 3652 days until I am 35 years old and conceiving may mean; chromosomal and genetic conditions, an increased likelihood of preterm birth, low birth weight, and cesarean delivery, heightened risk of miscarriage or stillbirth.

Each bead of the watches band is a calendar month acting as a reminder that fertile years are not infinite. But can I even have kids? And do I want them?
