Unraveling

Unraveling’ is a wearable constellation of magnetic strings of pearls, designed for a filmed performance in collaboration with Bart Hess and Ana Sofia De Mucha.

At first, Ana Sofia is covered in symbols of femininity and order. But unease sets in. A single tug disrupts the delicate balance - each strand pulling another in a relentless chain reaction. As she stumbles, the structure unravels, exposing her body.

The piece is rooted in the personal experience of wearing hundreds of pearls daily. Beautiful but fragile as they suddenly break and scatter without warning. It mirrors the sensation of mentally coming undone, trying to pick up the pieces, but they keep slipping through your fingers.

While discussing this project, a friend was reminded of an Emily Dickinson poem. I couldn’t have put it any better:

“I felt a Cleaving in my Mind—
As if my Brain had split—
I tried to match it—Seam by Seam—
But could not make them fit.

The thought behind, I strove to join
Unto the thought before—
But Sequence ravelled out of Sound
Like Balls—upon a Floor.”
